Common Antivirus Myths, Debunked

A lot of the advice people repeat about antivirus software is years out of date, or was never quite true to begin with. Here are the ones we run into most often, and what our own lab testing actually shows.

"Windows Defender Is All You Need"

Built-in protection has genuinely improved over the years, and for extremely light, careful use it can be adequate. But in our own testing, dedicated third-party suites consistently catch a meaningfully higher share of newly emerging threats and add real features — a proper firewall, ransomware rollback, identity monitoring — that the built-in option simply doesn't offer. "Adequate" and "best available" aren't the same claim.

"More Expensive Always Means More Protected"

It doesn't, reliably. We've scored mid-priced suites above premium ones when the premium plan's extra cost bought mostly bundled extras — a VPN, cloud backup — rather than a meaningfully better detection engine. Price buys features; it doesn't automatically buy a better core scan.

"A Slower Computer Means Better Protection"

This one is backwards. A well-engineered scan engine can run a thorough, real-time check with minimal system impact — that's an engineering achievement, not evidence the product is doing less. If a product noticeably slows your machine down, that's a real cost worth weighing, not proof it's working harder on your behalf.

"You Only Need Protection If You Visit Risky Sites"

A large share of the infections we see in testing don't come from obviously sketchy websites — they arrive through compromised ad networks, malicious email attachments disguised as invoices or shipping notices, and infected USB drives plugged in without a second thought. Careful browsing habits help, but they don't replace real-time protection.

"Free Antivirus Is Always a Trap"

Some free tiers genuinely are stripped-down trials in disguise, but plenty of the free products in our rating are fully capable for light, everyday use — the paid upgrade mostly buys extra features and device coverage, not basic protection. "Running Two Antivirus Products Doubles Your Protection"

It doesn't — running two real-time engines simultaneously typically causes conflicts, false positives, and a heavier performance hit than either product running alone, without a meaningful protection benefit to show for it. Pick one primary real-time product and, if you want a second opinion, use an on-demand scanner rather than a second full-time suite.

"Antivirus Software Slows Down Every Computer Noticeably"

This was truer a decade ago than it is today. Our own performance benchmarks show a real spread between products — some genuinely do add noticeable lag, while others run close to invisibly in the background. That's exactly why performance impact is one of the four numbers behind every score on this site, rather than an afterthought mentioned only in the review text.

"Mac and Mobile Devices Don't Need Protection"

Mac and mobile malware is real and growing, even if it's less common than on Windows. Phishing, malicious apps, and unsecured public Wi-Fi affect every platform, and a growing number of the suites we test now cover Windows, Mac, Android, and iPhone under a single plan specifically because the risk no longer stops at one operating system.

"A Security Suite Needs Constant Manual Scans to Work"

Modern real-time protection does the actual work continuously in the background, checking files as they're opened, downloaded, or modified rather than waiting for a scheduled sweep. A weekly full scan is still a reasonable habit for catching anything dormant, but the idea that a suite is "off duty" between manual scans misunderstands how real-time engines are actually built to run.

"Uninstalling Old Antivirus Software Is Optional Before Installing a New One"

Leaving a previous security suite's remnants in place is one of the most common causes of the performance problems people blame on their new product. Two incompletely removed real-time engines competing for the same files can cause exactly the sluggishness and false-positive conflicts people assume means their new choice is "just heavy" — when a proper uninstall, including the vendor's dedicated removal tool where one exists, would have prevented it entirely.
